| Joensuu is a university town and one of the of most important harbor cities of the North Karelia Region in Finland. The tourist landmarks include: the town hall, a typical example of Saarinen's architecture, the Neogothic church and the Modern Museum of History and culture. The Perhos-Botania University Botanical Gardens illustrate habitats from all over the world. You can see a thousand exotic species, carnivorous and tactile plants, lianas and bamboo from desert to rain forests. There are also butterfly and insect collections, theme exhibitions, turtles, and a talking parrot. Some very good hiking tracks can be found just outside town. |
