Day 1: USA - Barcelona
After your overnight transatlantic flight from the United States and passing through customs, you will head to your selected hotel. After that you will have the rest of the morning free. This evening we recommend a nice dinner in front of the sea in the Olympic port.
Day 2 : Barcelona
Breakfast. A full day to visit Barcelona. We recommend a walk to the Gothic Quarter, full of building from the 12 th to the 17 th centuries, a visit inside the Cathedrasl. Also be sure to visit the Ensanche, built in the 19 th century where the La Sagrada Familia Church and most of the Modernist buildings are. And be sure to walk along the live Ramblas, full of street actors, musicians and painters.
Day 3: Barcelona - Zaragoza
Breakfast. Pick up your rent-a-car and depart for Zaragoza (190 miles - 3 hours). What was during the Middle Ages the capital of the Kingdom of Aragon has a rich heritage of monuments mingling the influences of the different cultures that have existed there. Medieval streets and broad avenues make up a city with an open and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Zaragoza has not one but two cathedrals and, like Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, was a major pilgrimage center. According to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared to St. James, patron saint of Spain, on the banks of the Ebro River and ordered him to build a church there. It is one of the greatest centers of the Marian cult in Spain. Be sure to visit the Pilar Square and Basilica, The Seo and the 16 th century Lonja (Old Market). In the evening, wander through the cafes, theaters, restaurants, music bars, and tascas that are populated by the 40,000 students of the University of Zaragoza.
Day 4: Zaragoza - San Sebastian
Breakfast. Early this morning, depart towards Pamplona (111 miles - 2 hours). Spend some time visiting this city full of history and deep-rooted traditions. Long the most significant town in Spain's Pyrenean region, it was also a major stopover for those traveling either of two frontier roads: the Roncesvalles Pass or the Velate Pass. In its historic core, the Pamplona of legend lives on. The streets and squares of its historic quarter still preserve a significant collection of monumental buildings dominated by its churches and medieval walls. Pamplona is a city where tradition and modernity live harmoniously. After lunch, continue to San Sebastian (51 miles - 1 hour). Upon arrival, check into your hotel and overnight.
Day 5: San Sebastian
Breakfast. Spend your day visiting this beautiful city. It is ideally situated on a choice spot on the Bay of Biscay, surrounded by green mountains, and lying along a white sandy bay. Fishermen's houses, a smart suburb and modern districts make it one of the most attractive cities on the Cantabrian coast. It contains an old quarter, La Parte Vieja, with narrow streets, hidden plazas, and medieval houses, but it is primarily a modern city of elegant shops, wide boulevards, sidewalk cafes, and restaurants. The shell-shaped La Concha is the city's most famous beach -- especially in July and August, when it seems as though half the population of Spain and France spends its days under striped canopies or dashing into the refreshingly cool waters of the bay. It is half-encircled by a promenade, where crowds mill during the evening.
Day 6: San Sebastian - Guernica - Bilbao
Breakfast. Depart towards Guernica, (57 miles - 1 hour). In 1937, during the Civil War, the town was totally destroyed by German aircraft sent by Hitler. This experimental act, which inspired Picasso's legendary painting, was the first of similar atrocities carried out in subsequent wars. Be sure to visit the Casa de Juntas del Señoría de Vizcaya (the meeting hall of the gentlemen of Vizcaya), with its symbolic tree - the Basque leaders used to meet under it to decide on the interests of the community-, the ?juradera? church of Santa María, the Museum of Euskalerria and the Parque de la Paz (park of peace), with colossal sculptures by Eduardo Chillida and Henry Moore. After lunch, continue to Bilbao (21 miles - 35 minutes). Check in at your hotel and overnight.
Day 7: Bilbao
Breakfast. Spend your day visiting this city. A must is the Guggeheim Museum. Bilbao has two of the best art galleries in Spain, six themed museums, countless contemporary art exhibitions and a continuous series of shows and performances. Gastronomy is an art in Bilbao. The capital of the Basque Country has prestigious restaurants offering dishes ranging from traditional cuisine to the most avant-garde culinary creations. Not forgetting, of course, different areas of the city in which to savor the famous pintxos (typical appetizers).
Day 8: Bilbao - Castro Urdiales - Santander
Breakfast. Depart towards Castro Urdiales (22 miles - 30 minutes). Castro Urdiales has all the charm of a small seafaring and fishing village with a rich tradition and tourist atmosphere, aided by the beaches of Urdiales, El Fraile and Brazomar. The town center, with its characteristic houses with wooden rows of balconies, is medieval in origin and earned recognition as a Historic Site in 1978. The old village offers by narrow streets, which are perfect for strolling through. The buildings of the church of Santa María, from the 13th to the 15th centuries, the most significant example of Cantabria's Gothic architecture, and the castle-lighthouse, visible from all parts of town, are the most representative sights in Castro Urdiales. Continue to Santander (42 miles - 1 hour). Santander is an elegant city that extends over a wide bay with views of the Cantabrian Sea. Its historic quarter includes a group of majestic buildings that are situated against an incredible natural backdrop of sea and mountains. Its marine and commercial tradition is linked to a century old history of tourism, which has its main attractions in the famous El Sardinero beach, the promenade and the La Magdalena peninsula. Overnight.
Day 9: Santander - Oviedo - Santiago de Compostela
Breakfast. Depart for Oviedo (121 miles - 2 & a half hours). You will be driving along the Costa Verde (Green Coast), washed by the waters of the Cantabrian Sea, this shore Spain offers some of the most breathtaking views in Spain, with quiet beaches that are surrounded by beautiful settings. A peaceful city today, Oviedo has had a long and violent history. Razed in the 8th century during the Reconquest, it was rebuilt in an architectural style known as Asturian pre-Romanesque, which predated many of the greatest achievements under the Moors. Remarkably, this architectural movement was in flower when the rest of Europe lay under the black cloud of the Dark Ages. After your visit to this charming city, continue your drive to Santiago de Compostela (140 miles - 3 hours). Upon arrival, check in and overnight.
Day 10: Santiago de Compostela
Breakfast. Santiago de Compostela's link with legend began in A.D. 813, when an urn was discovered containing what were believed to be the remains of St. James. You will have the first part of the morning to visit this beautiful walled city. The first surprise will be both the origin and the state of the city walls. They are Roman, and now designated as Human Patrimony by UNESCO. They are according to experts, the best conserved of those of the Roman Empire. You can climb onto the walls, following the footsteps of Roman soldiers who watched over the protection of the city. In addition, these splendid city walls encircle numerous splendid churches and palaces, as well as a sober Romanesque cathedral. After visiting the city you will continue on route to Santiago de Compostela, following lovely roads surrounded by oak and eucalyptus trees. We recommend, as has been the case with pilgrims for over a thousand years, you stop briefly outside the city in a place called Monte do Gozo (Joy mountain) to contemplate from afar the silhouette of the cathedral. After, you will check into the hotel selected. In the afternoon, spend some time visiting one of the most sacred sites for Catholics, after Rome and Jerusalem. Overnight stay.
Day 11: Santiago de Compostela - USA
Breakfast. Depart for the Santiago de Compostela airport. Please allow yourself enough time to drop off the car.
