Visit Madrid, Pamplona, Logroņo, Burgos, Leon, Lugo and Santiago de Compostela.
Following is our suggested
itinerary, please note that you may extend the number of nights in each city,
as well as select the hotel of your choice.
Day 1: USA
- Madrid
After your transatlantic flight from the United States, you will be
picked up at Madrid Barajas Airport by a driver who will take you by private
car to the hotel selected and ensure your check-in. You will have the rest of
the morning free. Afternoon at leisure for optional sightseeing tours. Overnight
stay.
Day 2: Madrid - Pamplona
Breakfast. After picking up your rental car you will head north through
the Castillian lands. Two hours of driving will bring about a change in landscape,
with the relatively flat, dry uplands giving way to small mountains and green
valleys. Early in the afternoon you will enter Pamplona, the capital of the
ancient kingdom of Navarra. Once checked into the hotel selected, you will have
time to wander about the city`s busy streets and discover that Pamplona has
much more to offer than just its week of festivities during the famous Running
of the Bulls (San Fermines).Overnight stay
Day 3: Pamplona - Estella
- Logrono
Breakfast. To begin the Way to Santiago you will drive to Roncesvalles,
a small monastic village in the full Pyrenees, a stone`s throw from the French
border. After visiting this celebrated enclave, the traditional entry door for
pilgrims to the Way of Santiago for over a thousand years, you will head for
Puente la Reina, where the various Ways coming from other points in France,
merge. You will continue to Estella, where visits to its many Romanesque monuments
(from San Miguel Church to the Navarra Kings Palace) are well worth a visit.
A few miles from Lizarra, which is the Basque name of Estella, you will enter
Logroņo, where you will check into the hotel selected for an overnight stay.
After check-in there will be time to walk about the city, capital of La Rioja,
well known as the capital of wines as it is here that many of the famous wines
of Rioja are produced. We recommend you have a dinner based on "tapas" with
a local red wine in one of the establishments along popular Laurel Street, in
the heart of the old part of the city.
Day 4: Logrono - Santo
Domingo - Burgos
Breakfast. Not far from the capital of La Rioja, you will find another
of the most important enclaves for pilgrims during the past millemnnium, Santo
Domingo de la Calzada. In this small town, a lovely cathedral whose style represents
the transition between Romanesque and Gothic was erected, and where a pair of
live white roosters are kept caged. This is unusual within a Catholic church
and is permitted by the Vatican in memory of one the most famous miracles of
antiquity, the rooster that crowed after being roasted to demonstrate the innocence
of a pilgrim unjustly accused of robbery. After this stopover, you will follow
the Way towards Burgos, again returning to Castillan territory. Burgos was this
territory`s first capital and birth and burial place of the celebrated hero
El Cid. Everything in this lovely city seems to revolve around its cathedral,
one the most beautiful on the European continent, and today considered one of
the most important monuments of Gothic art. Overight stay.
Day 5: Burgos - Castrojeriz
- Fromista - Leon
Breakfast. Today you will drive through the territory of Castilla-Leon,
which was the historic centre of old Spain and where some of the most glorious
pages of Spain`s history were written. The first recommended stop is Castrojeriz,
a lovely village that, even today, is obligatory for pilgrims. Despite its small
size, it is home to four monumental churches and various palaces. An hour of
driving will put you near Palencia, and the village of Fromista, where you will
find one of the jewels of European Romanesque art, the San Martin church. From
the sobriety of its wall and vaults to the ornamental richness of its historical
chapels, the construction is a lesson of low Middle Age architecture. From there
until Leon is less than an hour`s drive thanks to the new highway. Check in
at hotel selected and overnight stay.
Day 6: Leon
Breakfast. The most representative monument of the city and one of
the jewels of Spanish Gothic style is, undoubtedly, the cathedral. This sober
Gothic structure is, according to experts, the most "French" of all the cathedrals
on the Iberian Peninsula. It competes with Chartres in France, in the spectacular
beauty of its stained-glass windows that seem to displace walls and transform
themselves ethereal before vistor`s eyes. Independent of the time of year you
visit, the light filtering through the windows has a calming effect and the
vibrant colours bathe and transform the interior of the building into a seemingly
infinite space. Spend some time contemplating the other marvels of this quiet
city, one of the first capitals of Castilla and from where its kings cemented
the base for the modern Spanish state. Today, as hundreds of years ago, pilgrims
continue to walk its wide avenues. Overnight stay
Day 7: Leon - Astorga -
Cebreiro - Lugo
Breakfast. Historically, from here, the Way to Santiago changed for
pilgrims who, since antiquity, moved across the relatively safe but monotonous
Castillan plains towards the green mountains that separated the kingdoms of
Leon and Galicia and where bandits and wolves awaited. Of course, such dangers
are long gone, but today`s pilgrims and visitors can still enjoy the beauty
of the Way to Santiago in this last section. The first stop recommended is Astorga,
ancient capital of the Iberian inhabitants and on whose ruins the Romans founded
the city of Asturica Augusta. From this lovely city the Romans controlled the
northern peninsula`s gold mines, the richest in the Roman Empire. In less than
an hour`s drive by highway, and now in Galicia, you will arrive at Cebreiro,
one of the most magical places along the Way to Santiago. Here, you change from
the Iberian culture to the Celtic. From now on, you will hear a different language,
and, possibly, the sound of the bagpipes, traditional instrument of the region.
In Cebreiro was constructed one of the oldest churches along the Way, which
is surrounded by houses called Pallozas that were traditionally constructed
by the Celts on this spot for over 2000 years. After wandering the narrow streets
of this village, you will drive towards Lugo. Check in at the hotel selected.
Day 8: Lugo - Santiago
de Compostela
Breakfast. You will have the first part of the morning to visit this
beautiful walled city. The first surprise will be both the origin and the state
of the city walls. They are Roman, and now designated as Human Patrimony by
UNESCO. They are according to experts, the best conserved of those of the Roman
Empire. You can climb onto the walls, following the footsteps of Roman soldiers
who watched over the protection of the city. In addition, these splendid city
walls encircle numerous splendid churches and palaces, as well as a sober Romanesque
cathedral. After visiting the city you will continue on route to Santiago de
Compostela, following lovely roads surrounded by oak and eucalyptus trees. We
recommend, as has been the case with pilgrims for over a thousand years, you
stop briefly outside the city in a place called Monte do Gozo (Joy mountain)
to contemplate from afar the silhouette of the cathedral. After, you will check
into the hotel selected. In the afternoon, spend some time visiting one of the
most sacred sites for Catholics, after Rome and Jerusalem. Overnight stay.
Day 9: Santiago De Compostela
- USA
Breakfast. Depart for the Santiago de Compostela airport. Please allow
yourself enough time to drop off the car.
