 | The Monasteries Route The three enclaves of Soria, Olite and Sos del Rey Católico have not been chosen at random. We discover that Sos and Veruela (where a Parador is soon to be opened) were, within the Kingdom of Aragón, protecting its frontiers with Navarre, just as Olite was built by the Navarrese as a fortress to keep the Aragonese at bay. Meanwhile, Soria was the ancient frontier territory separating Aragón and the Crown of Castile, to which it belonged. This plethora of fortified outposts bestows special characteristics upon these monasteries, whose purpose was that of both safeguarding and furthering the culture of each kingdom.
