Santillana del Mar is one of the best preserved medieval villages in Europe, a Spanish national landmark, that was once a famous place of pilgrimage. Take a stroll and admire Plaza de Ramón Pelayo (also called Plaza Mayor) one of the main sites of the village. Don't miss the 15th-century tower, facing Calle de Juan Infante, known for its pointed arched doorway. Santillana del Mar is a good base for visiting the Caves of Altamira, containing some of the most famous Stone Age paintings in the world.

Green Spain Route
This route, sheltered by the sea, starts in the Basque Country and ends at the gateway to Galicia. Argómaniz, Limpias, Santillana del Mar, Cangas de Onís and Ribadeo are the stops on this route that runs ?sheltered by the Cantabrian Mountains? through an infinite landscape of green meadows bisected by short, fast-flowing rivers. This is a route that includes a rich historic-artistic heritage that goes from prehistoric remains such as the Altamira Caves, the monuments left behind by the Romans such as the bridge at Cangas de Onis, Medieval settlements such as the town of Santillana del Mar and much, much more. The Renaissance is also represented by the Parador de Argómaniz, an old 16th century palace. The route does not forget modern art, with the Guggenhein and Artium Museums in Bilbao and Álava Respectively. The tour ends in Galicia, where the green mountains are only an aperitif to the historic, gastronomic and natural beauty of this north-western outpost of Spain.
