| Dating back from more than 700 years, Linkoping is the center of an old cultural region, mostly known nowadays for its university and its high-technology industry. During the Middle Ages, the Old Town (east bank) developed at the river's only fjord as a commercial center with busy river traffic. The great square, still used as the marketplace for the town and surrounding countryside, was surprisingly modern for the period. Dominating the city's skyline is the tower of the cathedral - one of the finest buildings in Scandinavia. The city also offers: fine parks, an adventure pool and swimming baths, a newly built Diocese and County Library, the world famous Old Linkoping with Valla Recreation Area, the Air Force Museum, the County Museum, fine churches, sports grounds. Several old castles round the city are well-known sights for excursions with activities. |
