| Karlskrona, an historic navy base at the souteastern tip of Sweden, is on the UNESCO World Heritage list as an outstanding example of a late17th-century European planned naval city. Stortorget, or the main square of town, is one of the biggest and most beautiful in northern Europe. In the middle of the square is a statue of Karl XI, who founded the town.
