Mayans still echoes.

Maruba Resort & Jungle Spa is located at 40 ½ Mile Old Northern Highway,
an easy 30-mile drive on a paved road from the Belize International Airport.
As you enter the grounds, through a tunnel of palms, pulsating rhythms of music
and wafts of incense pique your senses. Belize may seem like an unusual place
to go for rejuvenation of body and spirit, but Maruba offers a distinctive alternative
to your local health club.
Maruba is the only resort/hotel in Belize, and one of six spas in the world,
chosen to be a member of the American Express Platinum Card Fine Hotels, Resorts
and Spa Program. Maruba Resort and Jungle Spa is the jewel of the jungle, a
luxurious oasis in the midst of Belizean flora and fauna on a private 1,000-acre
reserve. Maruba can accommodate no more than thirty-five guests at a time, which
ensures privacy and exclusive individual care. Not your traditional spa, Maruba's
Jungle Spa offers an alternative to the regimen and routine. The resort has
been conceived and created to blend various Mayan, Creole, and African designs
side by side with a jungle setting. The result is dreamy, romantic, and totally
relaxing?a place where your everyday problems melt away. Relax amidst the richness
and splendor of exotic birds and fauna. The Jungle Falls Swimming pool will
cool you in the day and the Japanese tub will make evening star gazing an unforgettable
experience. The spa offers all natural treatments derived from ancient techniques
which incorporate natural products produced from Maruba Therapy® and the surrounding
jungle environment. Maruba specializes in a number of Mud Treatments using their
all-natural Mood Muds®. Indulge yourself and be taken away from the hustle &
bustle of everyday life.
The reception area and dining room are situated under a large, round, thatched
palapa, decorated in dark jungle-y colors and tropical flowers. The dining tables
are covered with palmetto leaves and hibiscus, which provide an attractive backdrop
to the well-prepared, delicious jungle cuisine. The restaurant offers some of
the finest Nouveau Jungle Cuisine and has been featured in the Gourmet Magazine.
Dinner this night consists of lobster paté in a phyllo basket, spinach salad
with warm vinaigrette, and a choice of chicken, snapper or lamb for the main
course, accompanied by potatoes and squash. The breakfast menu offers fresh
fruit, and fresh juices, delicious omelettes, French toast, pancakes, and more.
At lunchtime, the open menu features a variety of exotic specialties, along
with choices such as grilled fish, kabobs, soups, salads and sandwiches.
There is an exercise weight room, full spa facilities, a restaurant and a bar
and a gift shop. Activities include horseback riding, canoeing, bicycling, nature
trails, bird watching, touring the Mayan ruins and scuba diving the barrier
reef. At the resort itself, you can take horseback riding trips, and guided
jungle walks...Perfect for working up a good sweat, after which you can treat
yourself to the cooling Mood Mud Pack. Altun Ha ruins are easily accessible
as a half-day tour, and a nearby jungle river provides for a boat or canoe adventure.
The remainder of the tours offered, such as diving and fishing are farther from
the resort and take up most of a day.
Most of the buildings are single-story, thatched structures, with multiple
units under one roof. All the bedrooms have air-conditioners. Cabaña 12, a single
unit structure, is often used for honeymooners, as well as the "Chapel/Honeymoon
Suite;" all suitably romantic and seductive. As you enter your suite, you may
be tantalized by strains of Enya echoing from the CD player, and the lushness
of the rooms, heavily adorned with primitive African curios, animal print fabrics,
and a multitude of pillows on the bed. The theme carries into the private bathrooms,
each uniquely designed, with tile "mosaics" on the walls and floors, thick towels,
and Turkish cotton robes.
