Founded in 1543, La Antigua was once the third most important Spanish city in the Americas. The city, built on a grid plan inspired by the Italian Renaissance, amassed a number of superb monuments in less than three centuries. Its rich colonial heritage (the town is packed with churches, monasteries, and convents), famous Easter celebrations, three surrounding volcanoes, and abundance of flowers, make it a Mecca for tourists.

ESSENCE OF THE AREA
This is a charming, friendly colonial city located in a majestic setting nestled between three volcanoes with cobblestone streets, enchanting squares, and deserted convents. Bougainvillea everywhere, and houses with pastel facades under terra cotta roofs. This city will transport you to the colonial days when the Spanish ruled the region. For 200 years, it was the capital of a region that included Central America and part of Mexico, and it was one of the greatest cities of the Americas. In the late 18th century, the city was destroyed by earthquakes, and today it is a gorgeous city, with many handsome colonial buildings, 38 churches, and ruins that have been preserved.

Antigua has many hotels and some great boutique hotels. Please note that if you are staying for Holy Week you need to make reservations a long time in advance and prices will be higher.
