The Peten is an area of exuberant tropical jungles teeming with wildlife, deep forests and dry plains dotted with lakes and Maya cities. There are three reasons why travelers would want to penetrate the forests of El Peten: first to visit Tikal, the greatest Maya religious center yet discovered; second to enjoy the great variety of birdlife; and third to see the Guatemala of small farming villages and jungle hamlets, without paved roads or colonial architecture.

ESSENCE OF THE AREA
This is the high point of your trip to Guatemala. Tikal is one of the most impressive Mayan ruins. The towering temples are ringed on all sides by miles of virgin forest, so not only do you get to see one of the largest Mayan cities yet uncovered and researched, but also you will get to see animal and bird life like the yellow toucan and the scarlet macaw. Tikal National Park is more than 2,000 years old; the ancient city center is filled with awe-inspiring temples and intricate acropolises.

We do not recommend the hotels inside the park, as some of our clients have told us that the accommodations leave a lot to be desired, we think that after being in the ruins all day it is nice to come home to a good hot shower. These two hotels are about 40 minutes to an hour away from the ruins, but we find that they are so much nicer that they are worth the trek.

RECOMMENDED STAY
2 nights. You can fly to Tikal from Guatemala City or from Belize City or you can be transferred by car from Belize to Tikal, and you have to cross the Belize-Guatemala border. The easiest and most secure way is by air.
MUST SEE
Visit the "Q" Complex, the Great Plaza squared off with the pyramids of the Giant Jaguar and the Masks, the Palace of the Nobles and Temple IV, this one is the highest Mayan pyramids, from its top a complete view of Tikal and its surrounding jungle can be enjoyed. Sylvanus Morley Museum. From Tikal you can also take day tours to the following Mayan Ruins: Ceibal, Uaxactun, Yaxha & Topoxte, Aguatec, Xunantunich and Actun.
