Located on the northern Caribbean coast of Honduras, La Ceiba is the third largest city of the country. With a reputation as a party town, La Ceiba holds an annual carnival on the third Saturday of May and nearly doubles its size for the event, as it attracts over 200,000 tourists from all over the world. Fishing, as well as exports of bananas, pineapple, and grapefruit, are essential to the economy of the area. The mountain Pico Bonito provides an impressive backdrop to the city. |

| ESSENCE OF THE AREA |
| Chances are that the first thing you notice when you fly into La Ceiba is a massive emerald green spike of a mountain looming beyond the airport. This is the 2,435 meter Pico Bonito, located in the national park of the same name, the largest protected area in Honduras after the Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve. Rugged and little explored, the Parque Nacional Pico Bonito harbors an amazing primary tropical rain forest, and 22 rivers run through the park.
