El Calafate is better known as the National Capital of Glaciers. Declared a Monument of the World by UNESCO, it extends 350 KM and covers 14,300 squared kilometers with 47 major glaciers. Pristine natural beauty is the main attraction here. This area is also known as Lago Argentino, south of Patagonia.

ESSENCE OF THE AREA
El Calafate is the town located on the southern shore of Lago Argentino which is how this area is more commonly known. It is the gateway to the Glaciers National Park. High season is during the months of December to February when the sun sets at 10pm, and during Easter, so be sure you plan ahead as the hotels tend to fill up. The months of October, November, March and April are less crowded and less expensive. Since 1999 Calafate has an airport so you can fly in four hours from Buenos Ares as well as from Ushuaia via Rio Gallego.

Four hours to the North is the town of El Chalten, a tiny new alpine town known by mountaineers. The main attraction here is the Fitz Roy Massif which is spectacular. A post tour to see Fitz Roy from Calafate will take 2-3 nights.
RECOMMENDED STAY
3 nights in El Calafate so you can have 2 full days to enjoy the area.

High season is from December to February, when the sun only sets at 10 pm, and during Easter (be sure you plan ahead as the hotels get sold out). Other months are less crowded and less expensive.
Take our tour to Perito Moreno and our cruise to Upsala Glacier and Onelli Bay. Stay 3 nights so you have 2 full days to take in the highlights. If you have time add 2 nights to see the spectacular Fitz Roy. To the right is our most requested itinerary that combines Calafate with other Argentina regions. We have some ten other itineraries depending on your time, budget and interest. In the pricing process you will see our recommended properties. Our favorites are the Posada Los Alamos and Hosteria los Notros.
