Founded in 1680 by the Portuguese Manoel Lobo, Colonia occupied a strategic position and its importance was as a source of contraband, undercutting Spain's jealously defended mercantile trade monopoly. British goods made their way from Colonia into Buenos Aires and the interior through surreptitious exchange with the Portuguese in the Parana delta; for this reason, Spanish forces intermittently besieged Portugal's riverside outpost for decades.

ESSENCE OF THE AREA
A beautiful colonial city combining culture and history, with narrow cobbled streets, on a small peninsula jutting into the Rio de la Plata. It is only 50km from Buenos Aires, if crossing the Rio de la Plata by ferry or hydrofoil.
RECOMMENDED STAY
You can come for the day or stay overnight.
MUST SEE
Barrio Historico; Puerto Viejo; Iglesia Matriz; Real de San Carlos. Take a city tour, and then stroll downtown and enjoy this city at your pace.
